Dawson Public Power District provides protection from surges...

Frequently Asked Questions About Protection Plus

What kind of protection will I get ?

Over the years, we've learned that most of our residential customers don't have the protection they think they have -- or want--when it comes to warding off unavoidable and unpredictable surges in electrical power.

Your first line of defense is between your outside meter and your home.  Surges that enter through the main power supply to your home don't just affect sensitive electronics.  They can damage household appliances such as your refrigerator, oven, washer and dryer...even your furnace, water heater and air conditioner. That's why Protection Plus comes with a specially designed device that fits between your electric meter and your home -- providing around-the-clock protection against high-voltage spikes before they get in.

The second line of defense is inside your home.  Take a look around your home.  Televisions connected to a cable or satellite dish.  Phones and an answering machine.  Maybe a computer or a home theatre system.  A refrigerator and oven.  Every one powered by electricity.  Every one is vulnerable to a power surge.  Protection Plus is also on duty inside your home to provide additional protection for your most sensitive -- and most valuable -- electronics.  Each surge interceptor can be matched to the equipment and the pathway you need to protect.  Just plug it in -- from standard three-prong plugs to telephone lines, from coaxial cables to computer modems.  Your initial kit is yours free.  Extra modules can be purchased as you discover you need them.

Is your home properly grounded ?

Even the best and most expensive surge protection equipment won't work if your home isn't properly grounded.  As part of our installation service, we'll inspect the ground resistance at the meter.  If it doesn't meet our specifications, we'll install another ground rod.  If the grounds around your house need updated, a qualified electrician will take care of your service at this point.  Any upgrades made by a qualified electrician are the customer's responsibility.

How much does this cost ?

This round the clock service -- and the peace of mind it brings -- is available for a one-time fee of $50 for the basic surge intercept equipment, grounding inspection and installation, plus a small monthly fee of $4.95 for ongoing service.  This monthly fee is conveniently added to your monthly utility statement.

Customers will be asked to make a one-year commitment to this service to ensure that Dawson PPD's initial investment in equipment is covered.  If the monthly $4.95 fee is ever reduced as part of a special promotion, existing customers will be provided with notification and an opportunity to reduce their monthly service fee.

Can I get this same product and service elsewhere?

Yes you can, but it will cost you much more by securing a private vendor.  The price of this product is not designed to add revenue to Dawson PPD or any other utility.  It is offered so that our customers have the same choices offered to more populated areas.
